Description
The Safety Specialist provides field support, coaching, inspections, incident follow-up, and corrective action support for assigned Central region locations. This role partners with regional facility leaders, Safety Captains, Driver Ambassadors, and frontline teams to drive enterprise safety programs to the location level, reinforce safe work practices, resolve hazards, support incident response, and ensure consistent execution across the assigned portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Provide scheduled field support, remote coaching, safety check-ins, and practical guidance to assigned locations.
- Supports an assigned regional portfolio of locations, working directly with facility leaders, Safety Captains, and Driver Ambassadors to execute safety programs at the location level.
- Conduct inspections, hazard assessments, and observations; document findings and support timely corrective action.
Additional Responsibilities
- Follow up on incidents, near misses, findings, and hazards to support investigation, documentation, corrective action, and closure.
- Coach leaders, supervisors, Safety Captains, Driver Ambassadors, and frontline teams on hazard recognition, reporting, corrective actions, and program requirements.
- Coordinate with regional facility leaders, Safety Captains, and Driver Ambassadors to drive safety programs, campaigns, corrective actions, and expectations to the location level.
Continued Responsibilities
- Support program implementation, training materials, job aids, communications, safety meetings, toolbox talks, and Safety Captain and Driver Ambassador engagement.
- Track corrective actions, inspections, training follow-up, recurring concerns, and portfolio safety activity records.
- Partner with Operations, Fleet, HR, Training, Safety, and other leaders to address risks, DOT/FMCSA and fleet safety needs, barriers, and escalations.
Added Responsibilities
- Review trends and field feedback to recommend improvements and escalate overdue or ineffective corrective actions.
- DOT/FMCSA compliance awareness, including the ability to recognize driver and fleet safety risks, support required documentation, and escalate potential compliance gaps appropriately.
- Discipline in tracking issues, documenting activity, and driving closure.
- Practical problem solving and sound judgment in field environments.
- Collaboration with location leaders and cross-functional partners, including awareness of DOT compliance and fleet safety requirements.
- Field-focused safety coaching and relationship building.
- Other duties as assigned.
Travel Requirements
This role requires air and vehicle travel, warehouse and fleet environment access, extended walking or standing during inspections, and use of required PPE.
- Timely completion of inspections, field visits, and follow-up activities.
- Improved corrective action closure, repeat finding reduction, and incident follow-up quality.
- Stronger local engagement through coaching, Safety Captain and Driver Ambassador support, and leader follow-through.
- Improved visibility into portfolio risks, support needs, training follow-up, and high-risk location performance.
Qualifications
- Required: Associate’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Operations, Logistics, or a related field; equivalent field experience may be considered.
- Required: Three to five years of experience in safety, operations, warehouse, distribution, transportation, fleet, or field support roles, preferably within a multi-site or geographically assigned field environment.
- Required: Ability and willingness to travel up to 75% to assigned locations for field support, inspections, coaching, incident follow-up, corrective action support, and safety program implementation.
- Required: Working knowledge of safety inspections, hazard identification, incident follow-up, corrective action tracking, OSHA expectations, DOT/FMCSA compliance requirements, and basic regulatory expectations.
- Required: Ability to build trust with field teams and coach leaders and employees toward consistent safety execution.
- Required: Strong follow-up, documentation, prioritization, and communication skills.
- Required: Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools and safety, inspection, learning, or reporting systems.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Operations, Logistics, or a related field.
- Preferred: OSHA 30 or similar safety training.
- Preferred: Prior experience supporting multi-location distribution, warehouse, transportation, or fleet operations.
- Preferred: DOT/FMCSA awareness training, incident investigation training, forklift/MHE safety knowledge, first aid/CPR trainer or responder certification, or equivalent safety-related training.
- Strong observation, inspection, and follow-up skills.
- Ability to communicate expectations clearly and consistently.
- Bilingual in Spanish /English is a plus
